The pride of the Sobbhana Foundation
is the Boutique, which first opened in 1994 and is
located in the heart of Phnom Penh. Here you will find
some of the finest examples of traditional Khmer
handicraft products. From clothing and lengths of silk,
to wall hangings and stone sculptures, there is sure to
be something to please even the most discerning buyer.
The Boutique's diverse product line and unique
atmosphere make
Sobbhana a must-see for every visitor to Phnom Penh.
Best of all, with each purchase,
Cambodian women are achieving a better way of life.
Women and those at the greatest risk from poverty
produce nearly all of the products in the Boutique.
Because the products are purchased directly from the
producer, all possible proceeds stay in their hands,
aiding their financial growth. In addition, the profits
from the Boutique go towards funding the outreach
activities of the Sobbhana Foundation.
The proceeds
from the Boutique are now the main source of revenues
for the Foundation, allowing Sobbhana to actively
contribute to the reconstruction of Cambodia.
The Boutique specializes in the
production and marketing of Khmer silk. Silk weaving is
an ancient tradition, which today is still practiced to
the same exacting quality. Weaving continues to play a
significant part in the artistic, ceremonial and
economic life of Cambodia.
During the years of civil unrest
the most skilled Cambodian artisans either lost their
lives or were forced to "forget" their trade.
Sobbhana's programs are helping to ensure the country
preserves its rich traditions and heritage.
In the coming months, a second
Sobbhana Boutique will be opening in the Siem Reap
International Airport. |
